My Good Friends

“This song is about this sort of self-preservation part of my personality. There’s a part of me that’s always been really cautious, from the time I was a little kid; just really watching out for how things could get sideways really quickly. It’s humbling how many of my old friends have met their untimely deaths because they thought that the world was a safe place and nature was benevolent and they were watched over. I have this side of me that has kept me alive. I’m basically saying that I’m not going to be the hero who runs into the burning building. No, I’ll be the one who’s already outside.”

— David

“I love singing this song, Jolt. It’s making fun of this tendency that I have to look at the news on my phone the first thing in the morning when I wake up. I know it’s not a good thing to do but the song takes the point of view that if you’re doing this on purpose – if you’re making this choice – what do you really get out of it? It definitely gets my nervous system going! I compare it to espresso: It’s just a way to shock myself awake and I guess I’m trying to make my peace with that. I love that the song is humbling and at the same time, it’s a shuffle. It’s just rockin’ away, and this is what I do. It’s good to have a sense of humor about it, I think. “

  • This is a fascinating song to me because it’s about navigating your life, but not by aiming toward the thing that you want. This is about changing one thing; there’s just one thing that feels wrong and changing one thing changes everything. In this case the story was about shoes. I just made it rhyme.

    Jolt

  • This song helps me imagine how we can be there for each other, when we don’t have the words and we don’t know what to say. A man is walking across the street in New York City and picks up a cell phone that’s lying on the ground. Eventually he starts answering calls, and soon he’s asked to listen to people in a way that’s connected to a wisdom that we humans rarely have. I had to take all sorts of different stories from my own life and use a little creative geography to make them read as one story that you could follow. It’s a visualization of something that I have felt so deeply – how we are sometimes called to stand in a place we have never been and speak from a wisdom we have never held, but somehow you just open your heart and open your mouth and you hope the words show up.

  • Just a trace of light is all I need if I take the time to let my eyes adjust. Sometimes when I’m making a decision I think I need more information but most of the time what I need is to get quiet enough to hear the decision that my heart has already made. This is about just being comfortable in the quiet and finding that there’s another kind of aperture that opens - there’s a way that my heart opens just like the way that my eyes adjust. This song is smarter than me. That’s why I sing it.
